Groove Corporation CD"Record Prophets" - Groove Corporation
http://www.groovecorporation.com
Reviewed by Liz Sykes (OBScene, Ottawa Blues Society) - Summer 2009 issue

This one is for all you funk/R&B fans! Eight musicians who consider the '905' their home base make up this horn-heavy band - Cole Benjamin & Pete MacFarland (saxophones), Rob Gellner (trumpet), along with Lily Sazz (keyboards), Alex MacDougall (guitar), Kim Campagnaro (lead vocals, percussion) and 'Frankensteve', the rhythm section of Steve Hilbert (bass) and Frank Vignanello (drums).

Many of the names are familiar; though Groove Corporation is only five years old, each of the band members has a long history in the R&B/blues/rock/roots/reggae/country bands.

This disk serves up 8 covers and three original songs. Groove Corporation's forte is the funky stuff and their originals, particularly 'Blind Man With a Cigarette', are strong examples. (A follow-up CD with more originals is in the works.)

The covers are classics and the opportunity to hear them performed by an 8-piece band is a real treat. From 'Get Up Get Down Get Funky Get Loose' to 'Cold Sweat/Diggin' On James Brown', this is booty-shakin' music. 'Detroit Swing City', with its big band horn sound, is a favourite track.

This is a party band and the dance floor at their gigs must be jammed. I definitely want to see them live - it's hard to type and dance at the same time!

Groove Corporation Record Prophets Groove Corporation

Groove Corporation CDBoard member & webmistress Lily Sazz, the former Music Director of the Women’s Blues Revue Band and still its keyboard player, has for several years now been spending her free time with this eight-piece, horn-led funk/R&B band. Its members are mostly from southwestern Ontario and they get together in Hamilton to rehearse and record. Her fellow front line members, veterans all, are Kim Campagnaro, lead vocals & percussion and Alex MacDougall, guitar. Steve Hilbert on bass and Frank Vignanello on drums make up the rhythm section, and Cole G. Benjamin, Peter McFarland, and Rob Gellner are the horn section. They have some strong originals, with “Blind Man With A Cigarette” being the best of them. “Diggin’ Vinyl” and “Chasin’ Shadows” are almost as good and they hold up well in the company of the funk classics that make up the bulk of the program. Kool & The Gang’s hit “Jungle Boogie”, Teddy Pendergrass’s “Get Up Get Down Get Funky Get Loose”, Sly & The Family Stone’s “Thank You Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Again” to mention just three of them. Robert Cray’s “Nothin’ But A Woman” isn’t quite as funky a performance but at this tempo, it’ll keep the dancers moving too. Colin James’ “Surely (I Love You)” is a Little Big Band song and seems a little out of place, fine version though it is. A couple of slow originals might make for a more balanced set list but if you want dancing, this’ll work. The performances and the recording are masterful, MacDougall’s experience at production really shows here. The horn arrangements deserve special mention. In Hamilton they gather at the Corktown Tavern, 175 Young Street and the CD release party is there on April 4th. The band’s web site is www.groovecorporation.com.

GROOVE CORPORATION RELEASES VIDEO FOR "BLIND MAN WITH A CIGARETTE"

Golden Horseshoe-based blues/funk/r'n'b/soul group Groove Corporation proudly releases their first video to support the song "Blind Man with a Cigarette" from their debut CD Record Prophets.

The song is danceable funky blues in style, with lyrics that constitute a warning from a caring friend about living a reckless life with no regard to who gets hurt, like a "blind man with a cigarette", or a "mad bull in a china shop".

Beautifully filmed in natural light by Kevin Staye (Left of Normal Productions), in the very same space the album was recorded (bassist Steve Hilbert's historic stone home in downtown Hamilton), the video captures the joy this band feels when they perform together.

Groovecorp has kept busy over the winter months and economic downturn by writing material for their next CD, and filming the video for "Blind Man with a Cigarette". They also garnered two Hamilton Music Award nominations, one for Blues Recording of the Year, and Lily Sazz for Keyboard Player of the Year.

The CD Record Prophets is available through CD Baby, iTunes, and other online sources. Watch for Groove Corporation at the Beaches Jazz Festival (Toronto), the Corktown (Hamilton), Brando's (Brantford), and lots more to come.

Groove Corporation "Record Prophets" CDFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PLEASE ANNOUNCE, LIST, POST, CIRCULATE
PHOTOS AVAILABLE (SEE LINK AT BOTTOM)

MARCH 16, 2009

Who: Groove Corporation
What:
CD Release Party for Debut CD, “Record Prophets”
Where:
Corktown Tavern 175 Young Street, Hamilton, ON L8N 1V7 (905) 572-9242
When:
Saturday, April 4 10PM
How much:
$10.00

Although the eight core members of horn-driven funk/r’n’b band Groove Corporation are spread between London, Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Dundas, Waterdown, Guelph, and Burlington, the band tends to think of Hamilton as their base. It’s where they rehearse, and it’s where they’ve chosen to celebrate the release of their debut CD, Record Prophets

The recording was originally intended as a collection of cover songs for the purpose of securing more work. But the band was pleasantly surprised when the quality and fidelity of the live recording surpassed their expectations enough to consider adding a second session with some original material, and packaging it as a full length recording. The two sessions took place in the living room of Groovecorp’s bass player, Steve Hilbert, recorded with portable equipment under the hands of Ian Nielsen (once the bassist of the Trailblazers with Lily Sazz and Alex MacDougall). Hilbert’s heritage stone house with its high ceilings and wood floors has loads of atmosphere, and some discerning ears have agreed that you can hear it in the recording.

Groove Corporation was founded five years ago, and has been building momentum ever since. Kim Campagnaro, the band’s dynamic fronting vocalist, who doubles on congas and percussion, has been there since the very beginning. For the last few years, they’ve been playing festivals in the summers and occasional clubs in the winters while continuing to write new material and polish the show. In 2007, they won “Best Blues R’n’B Group” at the London Music Awards, and they were finalists and 1st runners up in the Toronto Blues Society Talent Search in 2008. (See YouTube footage of their performance from Nathan Phillips Square)

It’s not surprising that Groove Corporation is beginning to make serious inroads and an impression on music industry professionals. The talent pool is deep. Alex MacDougall aka LX (guitarist and producer), for example, has a long, rich musical history, having been a member of Juno-nominated band Bond in the 70s, legendary Canadian group Crowbar with King Biscuit Boy, Harrison Kennedy and the Rockin’ Hurricanes, Trailblazers, etc. His recording engineer and production credits are long, and he has been putting that experience to good use during the creation of this Groove Corporation CD.

Sazz has busied herself playing with several groups, and is still with, most notably, the Women’s Blues Revue. She was the musical director of this group for a decade, helping to bring their annual concert from venues holding a few hundred, to Massey Hall, where they have performed annually for the last 5 years. Through this project, she has worked with numerous amazing vocalists and musicians, including Molly Johnson, Serena Ryder, Jackie Richardson, and many others. She also put a band together for the purpose of backing Paul Shaffer (of the David Letterman Show), Haydain Neale of Jacksoul, Tom Wilson, and many more during a concert called “Rock the Walk”, part of the Canada’s Walk of Fame celebrations in 2007.

Steve Hilbert on bass, (a local middle school music teacher by day), and Frank Vignanello (drums), make up the capable rhythm section, and Cole G. Benjamin, Peter McFarland, and the band’s newest member, Guelph’s Rob Gellner (currently studying arranging with Rob McConnell), add the horn section to the mix.

Groovecorp Band News:

March 2011:

Bittersweet news for the band this spring. Cole G. Benjamin has left Groove Corporation. Cole was in the band for many years, holding down the baritone sax position and adding vocals and his personal style. We wish Cole the very best with his new endeavours in the London area with the Hi-Tones and other projects.

Steve Hilbert, our fabulous bass player, has also left the band for personal reasons. Steve has been in the band for 6 years, and we will miss him very much.

On a positive note, Jan Reimers has replaced Steve. Jan is an amazing player, and has a rich history with Alex MacDougall, our guitar player, from their days working side by side in Harrison Kennedy & The Rockin' Hurricanes. Jan is also a Ph.D. in physics... I think we need to find a good blues moniker for him. Hmmm.... maybe a contest?

For our longtime fans, you may notice a shift in our focus in the coming months as we begin to move more towards funky blues, and away from standard 70s covers. We'll be weaving more of our originals into the show as well. We're pretty jazzed about it, in a bluesy funky kind of way.

February 2010:

We've been spending the majority of our time in recent weeks working on new original material. We've had some writing sessions in "Kim's Garage" in Burlington, where the fireplace keeps us warm and toasty next to Kim's motorcycle, with which we share the space. We look forward to adding the songs to our repertoire and taking them for the real test drives with the horns.

Our video is still in the can, with Kevin, our videographer having moved to the Ottawa Valley. His girlfriend Joanne just got her Master's in mechanical engineering and got a job at Chalk River, and he's been super busy with his job as an AV tech and pyrotechnician (if that's a word?). Anyway, we hope we can have something out in the not too distant future.

We'll be back at the Corktown revving the engine on the 27th of Feb, so we'll be looking forward to seeing you all again. Over and out for now...

2:38 a.m. Sunday April 5th:

WOW! What a night! THANKS EVERYBODY! What an incredible night!

Dare we say, nothing seemed to go wrong? Yes! Well, I think Frank forgot his hi-hat and had to go home, but didn't miss soundcheck.

The joint was packed. Did I hear sold out? Or "almost" sold out. No difference, the place was hoppin'! And the dancefloor was solid. Lee Hillman filmed it all, so betcha we'll have some youtube footage for you soon, if you missed the big night.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful support. You made the night very special. And it was great to see old friends we haven't seen since who knows when, and people from way out of town. I mean WOW!

We'll certainly keep working toward being worthy of your enthusiasm as we work toward the next CD!

G'night all...

Groove Corporation's
Record Prophets

Groove Corporation was founded five years ago but most of its members offer decades of experience.
Featuring Kim Campagnaro (vocals/congas), Steve Hilbert (bass), Alex MacDougall (guitar), Lily Sazz (keyboards), Frank Vignanello (drums), Rob Gellner (trumpet), and Cole G. Benjamin and Pete McFarland (saxophones), Groove Corporation’s background in R&B, blues, rock, roots, reggae and country in bands like Crowbar, Kaya and The Trailblazers all come through but with a focus on the funky groove. Their business is making people dance now and as the title of their debut CD suggests, they’re business is about Record Prophets.

It’s about 70s funk music, like Average White Band, Tower of Power, or Sly And The Family Stone and even if you’re too young to know those names, you can watch in awe of the musicianship as some might do or simply follow the crowd and dance to the music.

Recorded in an historic converted church — bassist Hilbert’s living room - by one time Trailblazer’s bassist Ian Nielsen, Record Prophets is punchy and powerful — capturing the raw power of the playing. While mostly covers of standards there are some surprises like their version of Detroit Rock City – but it’s the three originals that showcase the future of the band.

“We decided to simply perform the songs live off the floor, and pick the best stuff,” recalls Sazz. “I think we kept the raw feel of the band intact.

“It’s a delicate balance between pleasing the dancers who want familiar tunes, with the informed listeners who are expecting to be challenged a little with new music, or unusual choices,” she adds on the song choice. “We like to create our own original versions of the covers but the originals give us a chance to spread our wings and introduce new ideas of our own.”

With another CD already in the works set to focus on even more original songs, Groove Corporation are set to take things to the next level with more gigs and more recordings – but the industry is not driving this corporation. It’s the love of the music and what they share on stage that keeps the band members and their fans coming back.

“Our fans come in many sizes, colours, and ages,” smiles Sazz. “There’s renewed interest in some of the 70s music we play, and I’ve seen aspiring younger musicians studying us up close, especially Steve and Alex. We seem to attract people who are young at heart and love to dance, and the musically aware and informed recognize that the opportunity to see a band with horns and percussion, pulling off a challenging repertoire, isn’t something that’s available on every corner.

“But we seem to have figured out what is important in life,” she adds. “Just organizing a rehearsal can be a major challenge but this is absolutely a labour of love. We have a two-time cancer survivor, a heart attack survivor, and a couple of band members with spouses who have health problems, and sometimes these life experiences have a way of helping to shine the light on what’s important. The camaraderie and support you get when you are in a band of people that care about each other, and all work for the group effort and not their individual self-interests, is something that doesn’t always come along, and can be fleeting. But I’ve heard the guys say things like, ‘I’ll be in this band until I retire - if I ever retire.’”

Groove Corporation play The Corktown this Saturday April 4 at 10:00pm. The cover is $10, and the CD $15. groovecorporation.com

"Your 10 piece band is exceptional. We really enjoyed the evening and you make Paul Shaffer look like an amateur. What a great group of musicians. Peter was awesome on the sax. I loved the bass, unpretentious yet steady as
a rock. The horn section was great, in particular the trombone with no charts and first time. wow! The entire group was supportive and you not only performed well, but looked like you were all having a great time. That
vibe is easily picked up by your audience. Great job." - Les Fenyvesi, after seeing us at Dundas Little Theatre

"...I can't tell you how terrific you  were. Groove Corporation made the night! The music, the enthusiasm - it was infectious. When I looked around at one point and saw that EVERYONE was on the floor dancing, I was thrilled. What a night! I can't tell you how many people came up to me to say that they thought the band was fantastic. You made a lot of new fans on Saturday. I also received many emails thanking us for a great party. A lot of that thanks go to you guys. Amazing..." - Paul Benedetti

"Groove Corporation are a powerhouse that easily impress those with their eyes set on the dance floor." - Ric Taylor, VIEW Magazine
